The reason why Thai food is popular all over the world today is because it is quite unlike any other cuisine of the world. It is very different from other popular Asian cuisines such as Chinese cuisine and Japanese cuisine, though you could draw some parallels between Thai and coastal South Indian cuisine, especially because of the generous use of coconut milk in the preparations. But Thai food is spicier and tangier and rich in colors, which is what creates the initial attraction of the food.

Various types of rice dishes are popular in Thailand, including the popular khao rad gang where gravies are directly poured over steamed rice. Another extremely popular dish is the khao neeo, which is known in the western world as Thai Sticky Rice. For their special occasions, they use an expensive long-grained rice variety called as the jasmine rice.

Most Thai dishes would not be possible without the use of Thai fish sauce. Since this sauce is not duplicated anywhere else in the world, it plays an important role in making Thai cuisine special.
